Strasbourg Christmas market 2026: visitor guide

Updated on

At a glance

Strasbourg calls itself the Capital of Christmas, and the claim is hard to argue with: the Christkindelsmärik on Place Broglie dates back to 1570, which makes it the oldest Christmas market in France. Rather than one big market, you get a trail of squares, each with its own theme, linked by lit-up streets. This guide is written for visitors coming from abroad or from Paris for a day or a weekend.

How to plan your visit

Start at the cathedral early in the afternoon, then walk west to Place Kléber for the Great Christmas Tree and on to Place Broglie. Keep Petite France, the old tanners’ quarter with its canals, for dusk, when the half-timbered houses are lit. Weekday afternoons are the calmest time; Saturdays in December are very crowded, especially between 3pm and 7pm.

If you only have one day, this loop takes three to four hours with stops. With a weekend, add a half-day trip to Colmar, 30 minutes away by regional train (see our Colmar guide).

Getting there

Journey times are approximate; check SNCF Connect or Deutsche Bahn for your dates.
