Planning your visit to Strasbourg

Strasbourg does not have a single Christmas market but a series of squares across the Grande Île, from the Christkindelsmärik on Place Broglie to the chalets of the Petite France by the river Ill. The nicest way to see them is on foot, along the pedestrian streets: most of the squares are less than ten minutes from one another.

To avoid the crowds, go early in the afternoon on a weekday; on Saturday evenings the narrow streets around the cathedral are very crowded. Bear in mind too that access to the centre is through checkpoints at the bridges: allow a few extra minutes and bring a small bag rather than a large suitcase.

If you come by car, the simplest option is to leave it at a park-and-ride and continue by tram; by train, the station is about ten minutes’ walk from the first chalets.
